Whether you have an entire manuscript or just a good idea, submitting a proposal to Surf Board Press is easier than you might think. We acquire most of our books as proposals rather than as manuscripts, which means that you don’t have to write the whole book before sending it to us to be considered for publication.
To submit a book proposal, just send us
A cover letter describing your book idea. As well as the content, we need to know the audience it is intended for; how it compares to books that are already available on the same topic; and the experience that makes you the right author for the subject.
An outline or table of contents to show us what you think the book would include and how you would organize it.
A writing sample that shows your ability to write clear, coherent prose. This could be previously published material like an article, staff or parent handbook, brochure, or newsletter, or it could be a sample chapter from the proposed book.
A brief resume showing your relevant experience and education.
Send all materials to the following address:
Your proposal will first be considered by our editorial department. If it meets our acquisitions standards it will be sent to our full acquisitions committee for review. The committee includes the director of Surf Board Press, the managing editor, the marketing manager, the development editor, and the acquisitions editor. This group considers the following questions, among others:
If you can answer any of these questions, then send us your manuscript.
You can expect a response from the acquisitions committee within six weeks of submitting a proposal. If the proposal is accepted based on its content, we then have to determine that it is financially feasible for us to publish the book. This analysis takes an additional four to six weeks. If the proposal passes feasibility, we negotiate a contract with the author, and work on the project begins. We usually allow at least six months to a year for an author to write a first draft and an additional three to four months for revisions before a final draft is expected. During this time, the author works closely with a development editor to shape the content and the writing style. Once we have the final draft in hand, publication takes from 2 to 4 months depending on the slush pile size.
Now you can do two things: Go ahead and request a copy of the contract or submit your manuscripts to us.
